Obituary

Alexander Fitts Jr. 82 of Abilene passed away Sunday February 21st, 2021 in Abilene, TX. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 5th at 12:00 PM at King Solomon Baptist Church with burial to follow at the Texas State Veteran Cemetery at Abilene, Texas.

Alexander was born December 1st, 1938 in Demopolis, Alabama to parents Alice Huitt and Alexander Fitts, Sr. Alexander was the eldest of eleven siblings and confessed Christ at an early age and attended the Methodist and Baptist Church. He received his primary education from Demopolis Schools graduating from U.S. Jones High School, where he played saxophone and clarinet in the marching band. Upon completing high school, he joined the military and served for 23 years. During his time in the military Alexander received numerous awards. Some to include the Air Force Commendation Medal; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one OLC; Air Force Good Conduct Medal with Six OLC; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expedi-Ditionary Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with Four OLC; NCO Professional Military Education Grad Ribbon; and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon to name a few.

He retired from the United States Air Force in 1983 and began a career with the United States Postal Service where he worked and retired from after 17 years. He also worked for OSI Security, West Texas Medical Center, and Abilene Regional Medical Center.

Alexander attended school at St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Texas (majoring in computer science) and attended McMurry University (majoring in English) in Abilene, Texas. He received his EMT Certification and was a licensed amateur radio operator which he enjoyed tremendously. He also took pilot training at Abilene Aero. His hobbies and favorite past-times were traveling, reading,dining out and talking on the phone for hours with family and friends. He was a well-respected family historian.

Alexander was an active member of Key City Amateur Radio Club, member of Abilene Black Chamber of Commerce, past member of NAACP and Masonic Lodge Star Tom #100 in San Antonio, Texas. Deacon Fitts was a long-time faithful member of the King Solomon Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years, initiated the Video Taping Ministry, served as an usher, President of Deacon Board, van driver, choir member, Sunday school teacher and served in many other capacities.

Alexander was preceded in death by parents Alice Fitts and Alexander Fitts Sr., son Albert Lewis Fitts, brothers; Pross Fitts, John Henry Fitts, and sister Janie Fitts.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 59 years Ora Hughes-Fitts of Abilene, TX daughters; Deborah Fitts Mitchell (Johnny) of Harker Heights, TX., Terrenia "Tenia" Fitts of Washington, DC., Siblings: Beverly Fitts, Louise Fitts-Hicks and Charles Nelson Fitts (Martha) of Los Angeles, CA., Barbara Fitts-Benjamin (John) and Lucy Fitts Las Vegas NV, Willie Lee Fitts Alliance, OH., West Fitts (Patricia) Atlanta, GA., Number One Grandson: Darius Fitts, favorite Great-granddaughter: Susanna Mathews Fitts Abilene, TX. God Daughter Aneesha Brooks & daughter Rose Phoenix, AZ., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many long-term friends and good neighbors.
